In case you doubted whether the Climategate email controversy is mostly about science now, comments today from Rep. James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) should lay them to rest. During a House select committee meeting, he got a bit, well, creative when speaking about human-caused global warming. Here’s what he had to say, as reported by Richard Harris of NPR:
At worst, it’s junk science and it’s part of a massive international scientific fraud. And not just fraud: There’s increasing evidence of scientific fascism that’s going on.
I suppose one could argue that some of the emails evince “a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control.” But just look at Sensenbrenner’s breathtaking statement. In one neat little package it encapsulates the evolution of skeptic rhetoric on climate science: what once was merely “junk” evolved into “massive fraud,” and now, prodded by Climategate, has morphed into “fascism.”
We know what’s coming next. (See photo at top right.)
But then we must ask what will come after that? Idi Amin maybe? Pol Pot possibly? Any votes for Stalin?
While we can only hope that some day we’ll get to the truth of what happened at the CRU and what it signifies, it’s clear we’re not going to get there with political eruptions like the one that splattered listeners of NPR today.
I still believe that in the end, the scientific edifice of AGW will remain standing, perhaps with a few broken windows.
I guess that makes me a fascist.
